Quantum3D

THERMITE Computer System

Quantum3D came to INERGI for the Industrial Design and Engineering design of an enclosure for a man-worn (soldier) computing system that included a hard drive, processor, high performance graphics sub system and other wireless and wired communications systems.

This system is is worn by soldiers and supports the on-site training and field activity that is required to support Special Forces. This computing and vision system represents the future of in the fi eld war-time and peace time mission oriented teams.

The Challenge

Accelerate the develop of an electronics enclosure that is totally sealed and still keeps the hot-running internal components cool and running reliably. Make this system fit on a busy human in an active theatre of war. To make this accelerated time frame happen on-time and on budget, the Inergi team used Solid Edge. The Inergi design team know Solid Edge saves them 1/2 hour per designer, per day. This enclosure needed to dissipate heat, meet very strict space requirements, weight restrictions and meet a 3 meter waterproof requirement. The man-worn system is waist mounted. Comfort was also an issue.

INERGI’s Design and Engineering Team used Solid Edge to design and develop the first and second style THERMITE(TM) enclosure. The fit of electronics and connectors was evaluated long before prototypes were made. The team engineered the components and analyzed the assemblies for thermal, vibration, pressure and other parameters. Based on this analysis and and client review on-screen, the parts were rapid prototyped, developed into master patterns, tools were developed and then cast aluminum parts were produced in 200 = unit quantities. These parts were used in empirical tests to verify that the analysis was performed within actual operating values. The assembled enclosures were submerged to pressures in excess of 3 meters, shaken, dropped and generally abused in an effort to make the enclosures fail.

With new test data in-hand INERGI engineers made the modifi cations and revisions to the system enclosures. Those changes were then prototyped and evaluated. The rough and tumble wearable computer system INERGI designed and engineered is in-use today.

The Results

The Quantum3D THERMITE(TM) designed in Solid Edge is the first man-wearable, multi-role, real-time 2D/3D embedded visual computer specifically designed for Embedded Training, Mission Rehearsal, Deployed C4ISR, Field Maintenance, Data Visualization, and Video Surveillance Applications.
